Margao
Site Search :

Margao is an important city in Goa and is also the second largest. It is a major commercial center of Goa. Margao is also the administrative capital of south Goa and is the capital of Salcete Taluka. When you travel to Margao, you will definitely feel the old world charm that still lingers in this place. Margao is well known for its rich historical past and diverse cultural heritage. It is also a major tourism center of Goa

Margao was the center of a fish market which was very famous in Goa. The market used to assemble near the Municipal Office Building, which was a very amusing and entertaining sight. Lots of fisherwomen used to assemble and set up their stalls and would attract customers by announcing it on top of their voices. These fisherwomen used to be dressed in some of the brightest colors and would look very pretty in those clothes

Goa's cultural capital and commercial capital, this South Goa city is also the second-largest (after Vasco da Gama) by population but arguably the busiest. Being the administrative headquarters of South Goa might create a misleading picture; Margao too is close to the central coast.... the long white-sand beach stretch, rated by an early-1970s UNDP study as potentially one of the ten best beaches in the world.

This beach spans 30-odd unbroken kms., from Sancoale in the north to the Mobor Peninsula in the south. Margao lies somewhat in the middle of this beach, five kilometres eastwards. Hence a strategic base station for beaches like Velsao, Cansaulim, Arossim, Majorda, Betalbatim, Colva, Sernabatim, Benaulim, Varca, Fatrade, Cavelossim and Mobor.

The Sat Burzam Ghor is one of the most popular tourist attractions of Margao. This magnificent mansion, also known as the "House of Seven Roofs" looks wonderful even today though it is mostly in ruins. There are only three gables left out of the original seven but it sure gives an idea as to how magnificent it must have been. It is a wonderful specimen of the grand Portugal architecture.
